Movie Reviews reviews X-Men Origins Wolverine

Article by Mr D Stevens

This installment aims to give a little bit of background to the first X Men movie.

It stars as usual Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, Liev Schrieber(Scream, Defiance, looks very much like Balthazar Getty from Brothers and Sisters, for a short while in Series 3 of Brothers and Ssisters Balthazar Getty took a short break, I was thinking for a second maybe he took a short break to make this movie) as his sadistic brother Victor/Sabretooth.Danny Huston(How to lose friends and alienate people) as the younger William Stryker. Will i Am (the lead singer from the Black Eye Peas, looks very much like Edi Gathegi from Twilight) as John Wraith, the lovely Lynn Collins with her mesmerising blue eyes as Kayla Silverfox, Kevin Durand(Martin Keamy in Lost) as the powerful Fred Dukes. Dominic Monaghan (Charlie Pace in Lost, Merry in Lord of the Rings) as the electronic whizz kid Bolt, Taylor Kitsch as the legendary Remy LeBeau/Gambit. Daniel Henney as the super accurate Agent Zero, and Ryan Reynolds(Blade Trinity) as lightning fast Wade Wilson(all the movies I have seen him in so far he never stops talking, theres a funny scene where this is hinted at).

Wolverine and his brother are recruited into an elite military team sent to Africa for an artefact, and in the process we get introduced to the other mutants and their powers.

The legendary Stan Lee is the executive producer and as any Marvel production the action is non stop.

There is a little scene reminiscent of Superman where Logan is found in a barn by an elderly couple.

Ofcourse we also meet some of the Marvel characters one of my favorites and the one of the least talked about Gambit, played by Taylor Kitsch I for one hope he gets his own spinoff, the action scenes where he polarises objects in his encounter with Wolverine is superb.

Hopefully there will be a further two installments and I can't wait for more origins for the other Marvel comic characters.

Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction movie written and directed by James Cameron, and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.

In the year 2154, the RDA corporation is mining Pandora, the lush, Earthlike moon of the planet Polyphemus, in the Alpha Centauri system. Parker Selfridge, (Giovanni Ribisi), the administrator, employs former marines as mercenaries to impart safety. The humans aim to take advantage of Pandora's reserves of unobtanium, a valuable mineral.

Pandora is occupied by the na'vi, a Paleolithic genus of sapient humanoids with catlike characteristics. Physically stronger and several feet taller than humans, the blue-skinned indigenes live in peace with Nature and pray to a mother deity called Eywa.

Humans cannot respire Pandora's environment. In order to move on Pandora open, human scientists have genetically engineered human-na'vi hybrid bodies called Avatars, which are controlled by genetically matched human operators. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic former marine, arrives on Pandora to replace his murdered identical twin brother, an Avatar operator. Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), the head of the Avatar Program, considers him an deficient alternate for his brother, relegating him to a bodyguard job.

While Jake is accompanying Augustine and biologist Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore) in their Avatar forms, the unit is attacked by a large predator, and Jake becomes estranged and lost. Attempting to last the night in Pandora's dangerous jungles, he is saved by Neytiri (Zoë Saldaña), a female na'vi, Neytiri brings Jake back to Hometree, which is populated by Neytiri's tribe, the Omaticaya. Mo'at, (C. C. H. Pounder), the na'vi shaman and Neytiri's mother, instructs her to coach him their methods.

Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), the mercenary head of the security forces, learns of Jake's courtship with the Omaticaya, and offers him to move over again in exchange for providing intelligence about the group and realizing what it will take to make them abandon Hometree, which rests above a huge deposit of unobtanium.

In the course of the next three months, Jake becomes intimate to Neytiri and the Omaticaya, and starts to prefer the life he lives in the Avatar. Jake's attachment begins to corrode his faithfulness towards the corporation and the humans and when he is ultimately initiated into the clan, he and Neytiri select each other as mates. Jake's change of faithfulness is revealed when he disables a bulldozer as it destroys the Tree of Voices; upon seeing this, Col. Quaritch forcibly disconnects him from his Avatar, and presents Selfridge and Augustine with a vlog in which Jake had admitted that his project was unproductive; that the humans had nothing the Omaticaya considered to be of value and that they would never forsake Hometree. This convinces Selfridge that negotiations would be futile and he orders the demolition of Hometree by a armed attack.

Augustine, whose tests says that all organisms on Pandora are connected in a big bio-botanical neural network, protests at the destruction of Hometree, but Selfridge persists, letting Jake only one hour to persuade the na'vi to leave before Col. Quaritch's army pull in. When he discloses the true reason of his mission to the Omaticaya, Neytiri accuses him of ditching them, which results in Jake and Augustine's momentary confinement. Jake's time runs out and Quaritch's forces destroy Hometree. Eytucan (Wes Studi), Neytiri's father and race chief, and many others are killed in the attack. Jake and Augustine are once over again disconnected from their Avatars and detained for treason against the humans. Trudy Chacon (Michelle Rodriguez), a safety force pilot who is aghast by the violence, breaks them out but Augustine is hurt by the merciless Quaritch in the course of their escape. With Augustine in a grave state, Jake turns to the Omaticaya for help. Searching for a way to resume their faith, he remembers that Neytiri told him that only five na'vi had ever tamed the Toruk, an extremely mighty flying creature. productively taming it, he flies to the na'vis, who have gathered at the sacred Tree of Souls. He begs with Mo'at to heal Augustine, who is now dying. They try to transfer her soul into her Avatar but fail.

With the help of Neytiri and Tsu'Tey (Laz Alonso), the new leader of the Omaticaya, Jake vows defiance against the humans, and assembles thousands of na'vi from other tribes. Col. Quaritch, seeing the na'vi's growing force, orders a preemptive strike on the Tree of Souls, as it is the center of na'vi religion and civilization; its damage would depart the na'vi too demoralized to continue resisting the humans. As the humans move against the holy site, the na'vi fight back fiercely, but human technology and firepower outweighs their bravery; they suffer heavy losses, including Tsu'Tey and Trudy. When all hope seems alone, the Pandoran wildlife suddenly attacks the humans in great numbers.

Col. Quaritch commands the bombing of the Tree of Souls but Jake destroys the bomber before it can reach its goal. Quaritch escapes in an AMP (Amplified Mobility Platform) suit. He finds the Avatar interface pod, where Jake's human body is located, and strikes it, destroying it and exposing Jake to Pandora's atmosphere. Neytiri kills Quaritch and saves Jake, seeing his human form for the first time. With the human attack successfully repelled, they reaffirm their love for each other. The beaten humans are expelled from Pandora, while Jake and his friends remain. Jake is seen wearing the emblem of the Omaticaya tribe guide, suggesting that he has become the new guide after the demise of Tsu'Tey. The feature film ends with Jake's soul being fruitfully transplanted into his na'vi Avatar.

Avatar premiered in London on December 10, 2009, and was released theatrically worldwide from December 16 - 18. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 83% of 229 critics have given the movie a positive review, with a rating average of 7.4 out of 10. The feature film earned million on its opening day, and ,025,481 over its opening weekend domestically, making it the second largest December opening ever, behind I Am Legend.
